This work visualizes the legal concept of "actio libera in causa" (an act free in its cause) by intertwining it with the structural model of personality—Id, Ego, and Superego—from Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. The visual narrative is brought to life through the raw, scanned textures of coarse pen drawings on paper, physically manifesting the fractures within the psyche and the unconscious.
Synopsis
Among all the living beings born on the exact same day at the exact same hour, only the protagonist, ‘A’ (the Ego), fails to escape the planet governed by the relentless gravity of the Id.
From that pivotal moment, the sky becomes choked with a colossal vortex, symbolizing the boundary of the unconscious mind. In the wake of A’s lingering shadow, grotesque and unsettling apparitions—breathed out by a mind that has lost all control—begin to manifest. Thus begins a tragic fate of wandering without purpose.
Following an endless duration of stagnation, A happens to witness a piercing beam of light cleaving through the firmament. Tracking the trajectory of this light to its desolate destination, A discovers the frozen, unawakened corpse of an Angel (the Superego).
The closer A draws to the coldly extinguished Superego, the more a tidal wave of suppressed emotions and jagged shards of memory surges forward to swallow them whole. Ultimately, losing even the final vestige of conscious will that held them together, A abandons their own existence (the Ego) and sinks into an eternal, indivisible dissolution with the planet of the Id.
